OVERTIME
When my head meets the bed,
I'm so tired, nearly dead
The only thing I really want is sleep
I think of things I've read,
and replay what I've said
Stirring, at every little peep
I try with all my might,
to keep my eyes closed tight
A war between my consciousness
and slumber
Every night it's a fight,
with my brain out of spite
Try counting sheep,
but I'd fixate on a number
When it’s bedtime,
it should be my downtime
Instead it’s like it’s wartime
My mind keeps working overtime.
When it’s nighttime,
it should be my peacetime
Instead it’s been a lifetime
My mind keeps working overtime.
I toss and I turn,
sweet dreams is all I yearn
Another random thought
just came to life
Heartburn or concern,
my stomach starts to churn
I try not awakening my wife
I bow my head and pray,
and finally drift away
Then start to have
the craziest of dreams
A giant made of clay
or a hungry lions' prey
Then I'm startled by my
own nocturnal screams
When it’s bedtime,
it should be my downtime
Instead it’s like it’s wartime
My mind keeps working overtime.
When it’s nighttime,
it should be my peacetime
Instead it’s been a lifetime
My mind keeps working overtime.
Now I lay me down to sleep
Why dear Lord are my thoughts so deep
Should I find rest for mercy’s sake
I pray oh Lord before it’s time to wake
When it’s bedtime,
it should be my downtime
Instead it’s like it’s wartime
My mind keeps working overtime.
When it’s nighttime,
it should be my peacetime
Instead it’s been a lifetime
My mind keeps working overtime.
